What's a good height & depth for growing vegetables?

Does anyone here used raised beds? If so, what is a good height/depth for all our yummy veggies? I think I want to create some raised beds after viewing so much online, but I want to be sure that I make them deep enough. Thanks!

It all depends what kind of compost you have to fill the beds because it can become costly to purchase, besides the cost of building the raised bed. 12" should be sufficient since most vegies are shallow rooted.
