Single row width

Hello Everyone,

New to this forum, my first post and from northern NJ.
I've been growing heirlooms for many years but this season for a new raised bed I decided to make it a single row and went with 3 feet wide. I put 4 plants in the 12 foot long bed and spaced them 3 feet apart. Beds are 12 inches high.
Tomatoes are doing very well but I'm wondering if I could get equal results by going down to somewhere between 2 to 2 1/2 feet wide to save a little space and money on some new beds next year. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome!

I would most definitely put more than 4 tomatoes in a 12x3 bed. But how many depends on variety, their growth habits, and most crucially, how you support and style/prune the suckers.

Generally speaking though, I consider 3 ft width as a double-row bed…. I think I could easily imagine 6 plants staggered in that bed. I suspect I might try for 8 …. :>
