When to apply mulch in a raised bed

Hi...

I have some down time and have been working on my raised beds that just kicking off the So Fl growing season. I have been reading online that you should mulch with straw/hay - out of curiosity when do you apply the mulch - after the plants poke through? I'm confused since I am reading it should be several inches deep?

Thanks....

Yes, if planting from seed you need to wait until the plants are at least a few inches tall before adding mulch. If you are planting transplants, you can mulch first and then just pull the mulch away from the planting hole.

Mulch can be straw or hay, but it could also be top dressing of compost, pulled weeds and grass clippings, used coffee grounds, fall leaves or any combination of above. Could also be wood chips, but that is better around trees and shrubs than around your veggies.
