Should a raised bed have a bottom?

I was really suprised when I saw what looked like a sand box but was a raised bed with a bottom and a front lattice type 3 foot high front for climbing crops! I did not see the price. It was about a foot deep all made from wood! It looked pretty nice but I would never put a bottom on any bed would you?
