My main garden area: raised beds and skirted in ground beds.

For me, a perfect arrangement for bock gardening, squarefoot gardening, and for any variation of intensive planting.

The raised beds are on an old concrete pad that was once a car port by a house. The treated wood frames are lined with heavy mil plastic so that any preservative leaching into the soil is minimized.

The right side of this photo shows the edge of the original concrete pad. The concrete skirts were placed to form a series of blocks to both facilitate block type planting but mostly to keep the pesky coastal bermuda (wire grass) at bay. That grass seems to grow a foot or more per weeks at it invades an area both above and below ground. The approximately 2.5 foot skirt is adequate to keep the grass from growing under and into my planting beds.
