Early Pepper Plant Varieties

Hey guys, just thought I would start a topic about early pepper plants. Especially good for us Northern gardeners. I have a few earlier varieties, but not a ton. Just curious what you all are going to be planting, as far as peppers go. :D

I found a few I think I'll add to my collection: Giant Aconcagua (75 days) and Yellow belle (65 days), also Hot Portugal (65 days) (very early hot pepper) . Does anyone know of any early bell peppers, beside California wonder. I have some Heirloom bells (red/orange), however they take until about Sept 15th for me (over 100 days), and that is cutting it very close. There must be some early heirlooms out there though.

Hey, Brian.

You helped me out a lot in my "pepper post" (I actually have another question there for you right now  ) so, I'm going to try to help you out right now.

Although you seem to prefer heirlooms (as do I) I'm including a few hybrids just for kicks. Also, I don't know if the others are heirloom or hybrid since the site doesn't say. I'd assume that if it doesn't specify hybrid, its an heirloom. You may want to cross-reference with another source, just to be sure. I believe Cornell University's site have a vegetable variety section.

Here's some earlier peppers:

HOT

Hybrid:

Possible Heirloom:

Sweet Bell

Hybrid:

Possible Heirloom:

Still want more? here you go!

Hmm... I was planning on growing jalapenos and (for the first time) Bhut Jolokia. But now I think that I may need to place another order after seeing all these :o (and I think that I may have answered the question I had in one of my other threads too :) ).

Happy growing.

Yeah I saw that question, I posted a quick reply in that other thread. Thanks so much garden5. The early cayenne is interesting me! I have a ton of cayenne but none of them are early. I also was looking for super Sheppard...have to grab a few seeds of those as well ;). The Marconi is very similar to that as well.

This is a very old topic but seems the best place to post my question: Are California Wonder and Early Cal Wonder the same with different naming, or is Earlical really an earlier strain?

Early Cal Wonder is an open pollinated cultivar introduced by Territorial seed in 1998 that is suitable for cool growing areas.
California Wonder has multiple cultivars and are probably recrosses from different breeders using the same parents. The oldest is from 1965 but there are other crosses that were done in the 90's

Gypsy is supposed to be an all around pepper that grows well in hot and cold regions. I did try it. It does not have enough disease resistance and the pepper is smaller three lobed. Its was an AAS winner.

King of the North and Red Knight also have good reviews. I am going to try to grow Red Knight. Hopefully, I can get seeds. I tried before but they were sold out.
