Sometimes the grocery store dried beans -- if fully mature and not heat processed/dried -- will grow.
I wanted to try growing Christmas Lima beans just because they look so pretty, so I bought about a cup of the beans (to try eating) plus a dozen or so to try growing from the bulk section. I tried pre-germinating them (soak overnight at room temperature, then rinse twice and drain 3 times a day, keeping in a drained jar laying sideways to hold some humidity but sufficient fresh air circulation).
After they did germinate with a tiny root tip showing, I sowed them in the garden and they grew. I have enough saved mature seeds to grow them again this year.
