How to Care for Sunflowers?

I love sunflowers and have started to grow a few, but I wish I had asked ahead of time, what are the best conditions for sunflowers? can they grow in containers? if in the ground do I still treat them with plant food and/or pesticides?

I know nothing, throw your knowledge at me, please

I started my sunflower seeds in small containers, prior to transplanting them out by my back fence. I had to make a wire cover for the little containers, to prevent the crows from pulling up the little sprouts. As I recall, once the leaves shed all of the seed covering, the birds left the seedlings alone, and I could safely plant them out by the fence.
