Help with ideas on what to plant.

I recently moved into a house that doesn't have much going on outside. The previous owners had areas outside for plants but it seems like they just put random things here and there. My grandmother is taking me plant shopping as a house warming gift but I have no clue what to get. Any ideas?

are you keeping anything that's already there or starting over? It also depends on what type of sunlight those areas get too. It's hard to say what type of plants to put where without knowing how much sun it will get?
