A 30+ year old question on marigolds

This has happened whenever and whatever garden I've planted either French or African style marigolds: within a day or two the leaves start turning purple, sometimes a lot, sometimes a bit. Sometimes they pull out of it, sometimes not. Set outside to harden or not, results are same. Warm or cool weather, doesn't seem to matter. Store bought or home grown which I know have received correct nutrients, no difference. Raised beds or right into ground, same thing occurs.
I would love a solution to this.[/img]

general consensus seems to be that cold soil makes it difficult for the plants to uptake phosphorus and phosphorus deficiency leads to the purpling.

Personally I think it's just a general stress syndrome. I've seen it when I let them dry out too much.

But whenever the stress is removed, they usually recover and are fine.

I might go with stress somewhat . The soil temp has to be okay, as all our field corn is up and can be rowed, and it likes mid 50's soil temp to germInate.
Maybe swings in air temp early in season?
Maybe the wind on top of this open hill chills them?
Those are other temp related conditions that might be contributing.
Thnx for input. Happy gardening!
