Hi everyone/my name is Annette,

I've just moved to Northern Spain,high up in the mountains.I've got a South facing garden here with beautiful soil.Can anyone suggest plants that will tolerate cold nights and hot days-since we have great extremes of temperature during a 24 hour period.
I have success transplanting some local natural plants but I'd like to expand my garden to make it as beautiful and varied as I can.
My new garden is the joy of my life but I like my plants to be happy and not to force them to try and live where they're are not happy!
Since I intend to be here for the rest of my life as I'm retired now,I'malso looking to plant a few special trees/my plot is about a third of an acre.

Annette, it sounds exciting to be able to plant a new garden! Congratulations on your new home and retirement! It would be helpful to know your hardiness zone. Here's that map I mentioned on another post.

Thankyou for your concern about the High Altitude post. don't worry as it wasn,t so important, I was just trying to get going with the Forum!
Thanks to everyone as I,ve probably been causing a bit of mild havoc as I am new to all this. My son gave me a rough idea but then it was up to me! I had a very informative post today from Newt which will be very useful, and now I also know that the area of N. Spain where I live is a zone 8/9, so things are already improving!Thanks again

Hello to you Newt, and thanks for all the trouble you have taken to provide me with so much information. Already from the map I can see that I am in a zone 8/9 which is already better for communication! The little village where I live often has it,s own weather as often 15 kms away it is overcast and cloudy, or fog whereas we are basking in sunshine. I think that is one reason why I already have some very happy plants thriving here.
I hope soon to be communicating more efficiently!

Annette, you are so very welcome! The more you read and the more you post, the sooner you'll get the hang of it. We all learn something new all the time.

In your zone there are many Mediterranean plants you could grow. With a south facing garden you'll probably have to choose plants that prefer full sun. I'm not sure what trees are available in Spain, but maybe you could find a book on trees of Spain or trees of the Mediterranean.

I'd like to mention Google. I've heard people say, "Google is your friend". You can go to https://www.google.com/ and search for all kinds of info. I like to search for info on plants. You can also click on 'Images' and often get lots of pictures of what you are looking for. There are many ways to search. For your question about trees I would search like this:
trees + Spain
trees + Mediterranean

The third site down mentions the Carob tree. It's a site from Perdue University so I figure it will have some helpful info. I right clicked on it to open it in a new window. Looks like it would be a large tree.

I often find I can get even more info searching with the botanical names of plants so I searched with the botanical name: Ceratonia siliqua

Hi; so this is where you got to. Sorry about the mix up but as I mentioned in the P.M. I was seeing two identical posts so I deleted one. The next thing I knew they were both gone. I missed this as I primarily stick to the bonsai forum. How is your tree doing by the way?
