Ideas for Border Summer 2007

Hello
I adore gardening and am seeking advice for my border in summer 2007.
I have a small front garden and have a border to the side of drive and lawn.
I have been growing box hedging which is around 8 inches high at each side, in the middle I have planted lavender.
I want to plant a row of something in between the box hedging and lavender and have around a foot of soil to fill. It is a formal garden and I would like a flowering plant to last throughout the summer months to plant in this foot space.
This year I planted all white buzzie lizies but was not over impressed.
In the winter I will plant out winter pansies.
Any ideas as I like to :?: grow from seed if possible as it works out cheaper.
Thanks

I did Marigolds, Columbine, Snapdragons, Baby Blue Eyes and one other flower from seed (in flats and then transplanted them). they did great all summer, and are still going.

What have other people done.

Hi Cat,

You mentioned that you planted "buzzie lizies", but I think you mean bizzy lizzies aka impatiens walleriana. Is this what you planted and didn't like?

If that's it, these plants like a shady spot. Since you have lavender there too, maybe it was too much sun for them. If it is a shady spot consider tuberous begonias, torenia or coleus.
