it grew out of nowhere in our garden this year and we like it, but can't figure out exactly what it is.

Thanks

Hi Caedo,

It looks like you have a butterfly bush with some type of vine growing on it. If that's not the case your plant also reminds me of American Bellflower aka Tall Bellflower - Campanulastrum americanum. Is this it?

If none of those fit, what state are you in so we could look for wildflowers in your state?

There's no vine there. That's just the plant itself that's standing up there.

I'm not sure... that could actually be it, since the flower's petals are kind of jagged like that. Ours also has shoots off the sides all around the main stem, similar to a satillite dish.

That does look like it though and would explain why my other answers (elsewhere) have been that it looks like a campanula.

And I'm in eastern Nebraska, if that makes a difference also.

Thanks for the possible answers!

Great, I'm in good company! :) I did a quick google with:
Nebraska + wildflower
and found this site. Unfortunately your pretty plant isn't there.

You can use this site to do some searching too. Look under blue, violet and purple flowers.

I'd love to know if it's not the bellflower and is something else.

Thanks. If I find out positively that it's something different, I'll post it here.
