IS this a moss rose ? -- P. grandiflora 'All Aglow'

Is this a moss rose? I am not sure it seems to respond to water which is why I am wondering

It doesn't exactly look like the ones I'm familiar with and the foliage is so blurry, it's hard to tell. Moss roses have distinctive succulent-type foliage. Here's a couple links to images of moss roses, see what you think ...

Yes, it is! It's Portulaca grandiflora. I had not seen this variety of Portulaca before, so I had to look it up. It's very pretty! :)

it is really nice big round buds I want to grow more for next year cause this is the only one I have ever seen around here any ideas? should I collect seed or what?

I really like that flower! I want to get some for myself, so I've been looking for it online. I've learned that it is the 'All Aglow' hybrid of Portulaca grandiflora. Very nice! :)

Gator75 will have to let you know if they are willing to do some seed swapping (we do have a seed swapping section here!)

But for moss roses generally (as opposed to that particular one, which is distinctive and pretty) seeds are common and cheap:

But Gator's moss rose is most likely a hybrid. That means even if G75 collects seeds from it, the daughter plants next year may well not look like that.

I wonder if you took some cuttings and kept them inside for the winter... if you can keep that particular type of rose moss alive???

I know that the ones I have have grown pretty thick from just like "stem" -- especially the ones I started early in the spring...

Just an idea... I may have to try it with the ones I have now .. ...

Yes, you probably could. They might require supplemental lighting, though. I think I would plant them in cactus mix, or maybe just straight perlite. That would help to avoid accidental overwatering while the plant wasn't actively growing.

If anyone finds a source of 'All Aglow', I'd sure like to hear about it. :)

I found P. grandiflora 'All Aglow' at a nursery in FL. The only problem is they want almost $26 to ship a 4" pot of it to me. :(

I e-mailed my DIL's mom. She lives in FL and might be able to send me one for less. She said she'd look around and see what she could find. She's a very talented gardener. :)

I am all curious and interested now -- I want some Aglow in my garden!! :)

I think I will try my experiment with the rose moss I have in my yard this year... I do not have a lot of supplemental lighting (at least not yet) ... I can't wait to experiment :)....
Hmm.. I may not even wait until winter (my red rose moss just keeps growing and growing :) ) --- .. I will keep you posted :)

Plants are sooo much fun....

I keep getting cuttings whenever I see something I like .. some are doing ok some not so ok..

You're a lot closer to FL than I am, so it probably would be a lot cheaper for you. The name of the place is Gardino Nursery. They seem to have very good ratings, according to another forum.

The nursery has it listed as "out of stock," but according to their site, that means they have limited stock on hand.

I'm really torn, because I really love this flower. Still, $26 for shipping for a 4" pot is quite a lot of money ... well, for me it is, anyway. :(
