All I can suggest--not being familiar with gardening in the tropics--is that it either got too hot, needed water, or both. The burned appearance suggests either or both of these. What kind of sun exposure did the zinnia have? How often and how deeply was it watered? How large a container was it in (this would affect the soil temperature near the roots as well as how long the soil would retain water)?
