I finally got my garlic planted today. It took longer to get the tiller started than it did to plant these. My cat already has her eye on them she thinks if it smells bad it must be a cat box. LOL. The screen will keep the cat away. When it gets cold enough to freeze here in Tennessee about November I will cover it with glass to keep it warmer so it grows bigger and bitter. I need some straw. There should be something coming up in about a month.

You don't bury your garlic cloves? I've always planted mine with the base about an inch down, meaning the top is just a little below the surface. I don't know that that is "right;" it's just what I read to do when I started growing garlic and it has worked for me.

I tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make any difference. One year I tried several experiments in the same garlic bed some cloves were under the soil, some were half way down like these, some were half way down covered with sand, come half way down covered with straw, some were half way down covered with dead grass and sticks I picked up from the yard, some half way down covered with peat moss. They all did good.

One year I built an 8" tall solar box covered with a double glass patio door it did the best the sun warmed it up every day even on days when it was 20 degrees and snow, the thermometer in the hot bed said it was 70 degrees F inside. Garlic tried to grow tall but grew up against the glass so the next year I built another solar hot bed 18" tall. It was so strange to look out the kitchen window and see something green growing in the snow. This solar hot bed works good with cold weather plants like broccoli, carrots, beets, etc. That was 30 years ago when I was young and has lots of energy. I think a lot of what works best for each of us has to do with your climate and your soil.

I hadn't never try to plant garlic in the fall. I always planted it in the end of the winter or in the beginning of spring and I always planted garlic under the soil surface with the top at the same level of soil surface. I almost always have a good harvest.

Nice! Here in Sweden to get results with garlic we plant them a couple weeks before ground turns frozen, just so that the bulbs can make a little bit of roots before winter. I wonder what would happen if I tried your method. This may call for a future experiment.

I've planted my garlic in both fall (or late summer; even September) and spring. My experience is I get bigger bulbs and a heavier yield from fall planting so that's what I do nowadays.

I see, I havnt tried anything but fall planting. Last year didnt plant any tho... But I guess you could probably plant soon aswell if you just have anything to plant with hehe. But usually the start to come up early like the tulips so they do get a great headstart with fallplanting!
