Radish in Florida

I grow mostly tomatoes, but once in a while I plant some radish seed. Most do well but some fail to form a radish. I have had some monster leaves grow. This one seems to be doing well.

Less nitrogen and more potassium for root development!

Being in Florida radish will go to seed fast. Do you ever eat the pods or let the radish flowers fill the garden!

You would not think that a little radish plant would produce so many flowers. Some are white and some are pink depends on the type. The pods are great in salads when they are young and the plants may product several dozen . the seeds in the pods will grow if left to dry.

The 28 day ones bolt fast but some of the 40 and 60 day ones take much longer. If they are not watered much they will also bolt quicker.

Radishes get hotter when they are over mature. Most radishes can be eaten in less than 45 days, but some are spicy none the less. That is why I pretty much only grow daikon radish. It is sweeter, and it makes good kim cheee, takuan, or can be used in soups and stews. There is one daikon variety called rat tail radish, that is grown for its' seed pods. It has a radish flavor but not a strong bite. The root is hard and inedible. It is growing wild in my community garden.
