first rose, tips please

I just bought a rose and would love some tips to keep it growing. It is my first rose, ever. I just put in the ground two days ago where it gets full sun.

I started a rose garden this Spring and it has worked out well. Some things I've learned: roses, unlike some other plants, require attention at least every other day. Roses prefer well-drained soil and watering on a regular basis is a must. Fertilizing bi-monthly and pruning old blooms has proven to stunt growth of multiple blooms for every pruned bloom. Inspecting bushes at least a few times a week for pests and containing the problem before it gets out of hand is good. Even better is to spray regularly to prevent pests from attacking. I've found the american rose society website (www.ars.org) and my local rose society website have been very informative regarding planting, care, and pest control. Your local greenhouse/nursery would be another good source of information. Good luck!

Roses are a challenge in Minnesota. R. rugosa including the Pavement series, some of the Canadian Explorer and Parkland series, and a few scattered others (e.g. 'Seafoam') are the only easy, semi-reliable options. Despite claims to the contrary the Buck roses are only marginally hardy. The hybrid teas require the use of extreme measures such as the "Minnesota tip":

or huge cages stuffed with leaves or other insulation.

Otherwise full sun, lots of water (evenly moist) and a fertilizer like Espoma Rose-Tone plus luck.
