I couldn't find anything in my books, I'd love to know what it could have been and how to prevent it happening again.

rose wilt
This spring a climbing rose I planted last year seemed very happy and this year when it started to show signs of life wilted as it grew, I cut it back and has since died. Any ideas, Frost? unsheltered spot? There is another rose of the same variety 1m away had a little of the same , I chopped it back and its looking very happy.
I couldn't find anything in my books, I'd love to know what it could have been and how to prevent it happening again.
