rose bush

I was given a rose bush and I planted it in the front of my house where there is shade most of the day and sunlight in the late afternoon. Now the bush seems not to be doing well. Is there something I need to do or not do to make this bush or any rose bush grow in this area. I love roses and thought they would look really good there.
