My roses have bloomed but the branches that came out are small and spindly. How far do I cut them back. My roses are very old and and most have only one or two major canes. I try not to cut those back because they tend to keep rotting back to the ground. I did feed them, but it probably was not enough and they pretty much live on rain.
My Grandma used to water her roses with a 2 quart pitcher of watered down tea, and an aspirin dissolved in it about once a month. That was her fertilizer. It might make the new growth stronger. As for the pruning IDK, I just clip my roses back so they're not in the way of the parking spaces, LOL!
I do that too. Some of my roses put out very long canes. Other roses though are only putting out weak growth. But maybe I should give them more tea. I'll skip the aspirin though since my soil pH is 6.4.
