Plants to Complement My Roses

In lovely ol' New Zealand, we are just kicking winter in the 'bud' and springtime is on it's way!

My roses in my back garden are starting to come away and would love to know what plants you have with your roses to complement them or 'help' with concealing their winter bareness or 'holes' they leave in your garden.

I have a lovely red rose bush that I somehow rescued (the first year we moved into our house it gave me one rose, so moved it out the back and gave it a beginners gardeners prune (not a very good one) but it gave me lots of beautiful blooms last year and hope for the same this year!)

Next to that I have a new white rose bush I bought just last summer, and then a peachy coloured rose bush that I gave quite a hard prune last year which is coming back suprisingly well so far......

Anyone with pictures, I'd love to see them! When my blooms arrive I'll proudly post a picture of mine :D

Daylilies help hide some of the bare stems that become visible near the end of the growing season, when black spot has caused many of the leaves near the bottom of the bush.

My favorite rose companions are perennials like Lavender, Salvia, Yarrow, and Cranesbill, and bulbs like Narcissus, Muscari, Lilies, and Iris. I try to get a mix that has something blooming in every season.

Oh yes, lavender and roses!! The lavender would be a small dense bush (well at least in my climate, in yours it might get bigger, then you could just cut it back and have all that lavender!) that would as was suggested, hide the barer spots. And so beautiful:
