Strange growths on leaves

I bought some roses for my girlfriend recently, and have noticed that these strange little dot-like things are growing from the leaves of the filler that is in the vase.

I take it these leaves aren't rose leaves, but didn't know where else to ask this. Pictures are below:

any ideas?

The "filler" is fern fronds, and the brown dots are most likely their reproductive spores.

Yep, those are the.. seed/spore things. All the ferns in my back yard do that every year. Nothing to worry about. :3
