What are the benefits (if any) for mulching roses? Does it make a difference?

Benefits of mulching for roses are the same as for anything else... the mulch suppresses weeds so you don't have to weed as much, it helps hold moisture in the soil so you don't have to water as much, and eventually it breaks down and helps return fertility to the soil... I also think it looks better than bare dirt which you would other wise have to maintain, to keep weeds and other plants from competing with the rose for sun, water, nutrients.

If there is any universal truth in rose growing it is to mulch. Use organic mulch not gravel or rubber. If you walk through the woods notice the natural mulch everywhere.

Yes! :D Do mulch the rose bed! Organic mulch is best. Use composted materials, shredded leaves, etc. Bark mulch is very attractive in the beds.
It is available in different kinds, such as pine, cedar, etc. Mulching is VERY beneficial to the roses, not just for looks, it keeps the roots cool and helps keep moisture in, and less weeds can grow. (looks nice too)!
