Do roses need full sun?

But do roses need full sun?

This fall we're putting in a picket fence and we're going to put flower beds on each side of the driveway. I would love to put roses in (I'd assume next spring they;d have to go in). Only problem is one side gets 1/2 to 2/3 day sun and the other half gets maybe 1/2 day of sun and its from the mornin on. Then the sun goes down behind the oaks in the backyard and our driveway is pretty well shaded.

Do you guys think roses would be ok in semi-shade? I haven't had a rose bush in so long that I don't know anything about them anymore.

Sorry for such a dumb question, I'm just wondering if all roses need full sun. I'm in central/south jersey and we're a zone 6 but our sun can be pretty intense. Today it was 70 but if you stand int he sun in seconds it feels like your gonna fry.

Hi Fairydust! Not so dumb a question! It can be confusing - what does it mean - semi-shade, full sun.......

Roses need full sun (right in the sun) for between 6 to 8 hours. If they are getting that much time in the full sun, they should be fine.
My own roses start getting shaded at about 2-3 pm and they are wonderful!

So maybe time the sun in the areas you are hoping to plant a rose in, and if it gets enough, go for it!

Hello Fairydust,

6 hours of full sun is just a standard for choosing a suitable location for roses. Lesser than that, you will just have to live with fewer blooms.

For me, I have one side of my garden with accessive strong sunlight and the other side of my garden partially shaded. As I cannot control the sunlight time and quality, I control my fertilizing and spraying.

The site where there is too much strong sunlight, I have to be gentle with fertlizing, giving each time half dosage of what I should. Where there is plenty of shade, I just have to be more keen in spraying to prevent diseases.

Planting is a pleasure, by the way, it is the love that puts into your roses that counts.

Cheers,
Pixi

Thanks so much for the responses! The one side that will be next to our front lawn seperating the driveway from the fence has been getting sun from the time the sun comes up until around 4pm. So I guess that side is good to go. The other side that seperates our driveway from the neighbor is completely shaded now with the oak leaves that have came out. I think on that side we'll have to do some shade plants instead.

We're thinking of putting in the fence and flowerbeds in July. Do you think it would be ok to put Roses in then or should we wait until fall or spring?
