Something is eating my roses leaves

Something is eating my roses leaves. First actual summer at new house. Previous owner put in two rose bushes. One has been in awhile and they must of pruning it down alot and the second one is a lot new. New to gardening, have been fertilizing them, however, there is big round holes in all the green leaves. Can't never see what bugs are eating them.
The youngest bush came out with tons of roses and they die and I got one or two more coming now. There seems to be no bugs on the actual rose. Also, the first bush did not bloom and I am not sure how old it is. In addition, I am fixing the soil. The soil was in bad shape in all the beds and I have been putting grass clippings around the bushes and using chemical fertizilers. Also, I think I might have to pruned the bush next to the first rose bush b/c they seems to be competing for sunlight. Help anyone?

Hello,

You did not state which region you are situated for us to imagine the period of plantation your roses are reacting to.

Grass clipping is a good mulching, but it supplies a lot of nitrogen. New tranplanted rose needs time to adjust and stablize itself. Giving too much nitrogen with trigger quick growth of new shoots, but such shoots will not last or will be burnt or deform.

The round cut hole on the rose leaf might be caused by Bee. Bees are using it to make their shelter in certain period of the year. This will be not do long term or any health demage to your roses. Some Bees will actually eat aphids too.

Roses need a lot of direct sunlight and good ventilated location to be healthy and produce good flowers.

Hope it helps.

I lived in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Supposely be zone 3a.

I checked my roses again today and have found a couple of caterpillar-like insects. Not sure if they are caterpillar or another insect.
