Pruning to bloom at open garden time

I am having an open garden the middle of July. Most of my roses are in between flushes at that time. How can I prune to keep them from blooming in the middle of May? That is their first flush. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Zone 9 Cool Coastal California Thank you.

Hello, cnoland. Roses respond to moisture and temperature changes in several ways but those are things hard to control. Cold temperatures, for example, are a favorite way used to delay bud opening in florist stores; that is why their "storage room" is always to cold. Instead of trying to control temperatures, go to a city/public garden that has many roses and see what varieties are blooming at the time that you have your open garden in mid July. In other words, your current roses do not bloom at the time that you want so, go-see which varieties do by visiting nearby gardens with other rose varieties. Or you could contact some of the members of the respected Santa Clara Rose Society for suggestions. They are in the northern California District of the American Rose Society and should be somewhat near you. I think they have meetings in San Jose.
