I am not a total novice.
I know to prune slightly slanted and above an outside bud. I also pull off if there are more than one bud coming out of the side in the same spot, or should they both come off ?
I have questions about the color of the stem/stalk of the rose. I have seen green and brown. Is there a difference? I know that bright green is new growth.
I know to cut dead stuff first. If there is something dead toward the end, do you just cut it all down, or just down to where there is live stem ?
Can you recommend a good rose pruning book ?
I wish some rose garden would have novices come when its time to prune, and put on a session on pruning. That way they get their roses pruned for free...and the students get the benefit of learning from an expert.

You are probably making this to be too big of a deal. You've got the technique. I wouldn't worry about multiple buds. As for the stems, the very woody stems don't produce very well so cutting those off isn't a bad idea. If you have a dead end, just cut down to a healthy part of it.
Just make sure you do prune. Remove any dead stuff. Remove anything crossing in to the center of the plant.
