planting a lilac

can I plant a lilac bush in a container?

You could plant in a container but a lilac is a fast growing tree. The container could be a starter home for it but would not recommend one to stay in it. My lilac was about two feet tall when we got it about 6 years ago and now is over 8 foot tall and completely covers a corner of the yard. I do trim around the bottom for mowing.

thanks My husband and I were just wondering because we can't plant one in the ground where we live do to stupid rules

You could try Syringa meyeri "Palibin". It is slow growing and its final height is not as tall as some other varieties.
