White Lilac Turned Dark Purple

Last spring my mother-in-law purchased a large beautiful lilac bush full of white blossoms. This spring the blossoms are dark purple. Has anyone ever experienced this or know why this happened. My husbands guess is that it was genetically modified/pollinated and when it tried to self pollinate this spring it reverted back to its natural color? Help...Thanks.

I don't know about your lilacs but I have irises who originally were the light purple and some of them in another bed have turned dark purple. I love them anyway

Strange how nature works. Thanks for your reply. I went and visited the "in question" lilacs and I think they are beautiful, too!
