LILAC FUNGUS
NEW STUFF THIS YEAR ON MY STRUGGLING LILACS. ROWS OF FUNGUS THAT LOOK LIKE EAR MUSHROOMS. GREYISH WITH A COUPLE OF BROWN STRIPES ON THEM. KIND OF UGLY AND MULTIPLYING QUICKLY. IS IS GOOD OR BAD? SEEMS TO GROW ON OLD BRANCHES, SO I AM TEMPTED TO CUT THEM OFF. LAST 2 SUMMER THEY STRUGGLED WITH POWDERY MILDEW THAT I TREATED UNSUCCESSFULLY. IS IT RELATED ? HELP.[/img]

Welcome to The Helpful Gardener. Sounds like your lilacs have some type of lichen. They are harmless and actually are good for wildlife. Hummingbirds use it to build their nests. Does it look anything like this?

For powdery mildew try using milk. Yup, milk.
