Lilac into a bonsai?

Ok, I have a dwarf korean lilac, which I am looking to turn into a bonsai (yes, I know the bonsai forum here, thank you :) )
the bonsai part will wait a bit, but I want to give it its general shape.

everything I have read on lilac pruning says to do it just after they bloom, so it will bloom again next year.

I am actually thinking of removing most of the current seasons flower buds (they are just about to pop open) to preserve some energy. does this make sense?
Also, if I am not worried about the flowers this year (or next), would it hurt to prune it back now?
I am planning to remove about 1/3rd of the top growth, and use some for cuttings maybe do an air layer or two...
would you recommend using cut paste on larger cuts (diameter about 1")?

anything else I should watch out for?

thanks,

Karin
