Is there any type of lilac that will survive in zone 9 ? About 20 mi east of me and at a higher altitude there is a scraggly lilac that does bloom, but it is a pathetic specimen compared to those we had in Kansas City. I love lilacs, but I am afraid that I can't have them where I am. I live on the west side of some mountains. It rarely get down to freezing or snows.

I don't get to have my favorite light blue morning glories. Morning glories are illegal in Arizona the foul up the machine used to harvest cotton.

I am in zone 6 so do not have personal experience, but the Descanso hybrid lilacs were developed in Southern California, specifically for places with hot summers and not much winter chill:

(scroll down almost to the bottom of the page to find the lilacs, including descanso)

Any hyacinthiflora lilacs (lilacs that are early bloomers) will grow up to zone 9.
