Advice needed on lilac in new home

Hi could you please tell if this is one tree with several suckers as that is what it looks like to me and also do I cut the suckers down and just leave one stem. Help please. When it flowered it had lilac flowers if that helps.

Lilacs are shrubs, not trees. That is they grow as a colony of a whole bunch of stems. They bloom better on newer wood. For old lilacs (which yours is definitely not), they can be rejuvenated by cutting out a lot of the old stems. So no I wouldn't cut the new stems out.
