Lilac blight/or rust.

I have some pink, non fragrant lilacs that have blight. I'm fairly sure that's the problem. Ive researched the cures and it seems I have to cut them back. My question is this. If I radically prune them down to the ground, will the survive? The bight is throughout the plant.
