When can I prune my lilac

I have a lilac that has approximate 2 inch branches. There are about 10-15 of them and they are spread out foot by foot. All of the leaves/blooms are up about 6 feet in the air. I live in Ohio and want to prune this bush back to about 5 feet high. It is up to 10 feet in some spots. Can I prune this bush now (October)? I've never pruned a lilac bush so any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated!
