*Help needed with aloe vera plant identification*

I have always been fascinated aloe vera and won a plant in an online competition, but the aloe I received and grown is a lot different to the traditional aloe vera that my friends grow, can anybody help with the species of allow that I have been growing (the dvd case in the picture is for scale purposes)

That's because I don't believe you have an aloe vera plant. I think yours is a century plant, aka agave.

They look somewhat similar, but aloe have much fleshier leaves which have the sap inside if you break it. Agave has tougher leaves that are very stringy inside.
