Tree ID - Purple Blooms in Spring

My friend has been trying to identify a large tree they have in their backyard. It had purple blooms in the spring and now has a large pods/nuts? The leaves are very large and heart shaped.

Yep! Of course it's invasive :( It's such a pretty tree though!

Empress Tree, right? That's what I thought. I see them along the highways -- they are so odd and pretty ...bare branches and flower trusses ...kind of like wisteria turned into a tree.
Learning never ends because we can share what we've learned. And in sharing our collective experiences, we gain deeper understanding of what we learned.

This is exactly what I thought of them along the road this spring! Most of them were saplings though so I didn't even realize they were the same tree as my friends.
