Yellow roadside weed

I found this weed growing a the end of a strange drive that led to nothing except to a haven of wild plants. I may have arrived too late to see it at its peak. Any guesses what it might be?

velvetleaf. It's the one I have written about that is a great trap crop for leafminers.

One year I planted some mixed wildflower seeds. This was in it and it is the only one that still comes back. It is a little weedy, but not seriously aggressive and I always leave some to be the trap crop and to set seed for next year.

Most excellent! As Bill and Ted would say. I'm always happy to find a plant I haven't photographed before. Thank you, Rainbow :-)

Thanks for posting this. In Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana I often see this plant sprout up before any others in vacant lots and other open areas and have often wondered what it was. Good to know, thanks.

there's a reason for its name - feel how soft the leaves are! :)
