Is it blooming like this now? I think it looks like weigela.

Btw that's an oak tree volunteer growing through the tall shrub and protruding from the top, right?

It is blooming like that now. I love it! And yes, that's an oak volunteer. :) I'd feel bad cutting it down. Should I?

Yes, I was thinking weigela, before I scrolled down enough to see applestar's response. Very pretty!

And yes you basically have to decide between the oak and the weigela. I have a weigela wine and roses variety with the dark foliage. But it is in a location where it doesn't get enough sun (which is most of my yard!). It hangs in there, but has never really thrived and is sparser than yours. If the oak tree gets bigger, it will shade out the weigela.

Thank you! It's always so nice to see it come in. Silly question, does it need watering regularly or does rain suffice?

Would cutting the oak back to the ground work or should I try to completely remove it?

It looks like a well established shrub (not tree :) ), so probably can get along on just rainfall, except in drought. I only water mine if we are having long periods of hot and dry.
