Hedge Bush with Straight Central Trunk

Sat Apr 26, 2014 5:43 pm

Greetings.

I wonder if anyone can identify this species -- or can at least name similar species. To me, the key characteristics are the straight central trunk and the evenly spaced branches. I saw this hedge in southeastern New York State, USA. The picture was taken in April, and the plant is deciduous. I don't know anything else about it.

I would call those trees not bushes. Pretty much by definition if it has one central trunk it is a tree; if it is multi-stemmed it is a shrub. It takes a real expert to identify a tree from the bare branches. Straight central trunk is what defines a tree, so it doesn't help identify what tree it is. Wait until it leafs out and post some pictures of the leaves and maybe we will be able to help.

So that means it isn't really a hedgerow of bushes, it is a windbreak row of trees.

If you posted this because you wanted to do something like it, you could do it with any trees appropriate to your area. But note that those are mature trees. Depending on what tree it is and how fast growing, that windbreak row was probably planted 15 years or more ago.

The one thing that stands out for me is the growth of branches so near the bottom. Take a look at Bigfoot Willows (Hybrid)

good work, Marc. It is hard to be sure without leaves, but that is a definite possibility!

Well said, Rainbow.

Strictly from the standpoint of trying to duplicate but not necessarily ID, birch trees might work.

If rainbow hadn't said "windbreak," I wouldn't have found it.
