Very strange plant that appeared from nowhere!

Hi,

Can anyone identify this plant for me? It appeared for the first time in May/June & is still thriving. I have only been in this house 2 years but the garden was gutted of all the dead plants last year. New bulbs have gone in but none like this, I don't think. It is a large cluster of several individual plants, each with these peculiarly thick stalks. The leaves are not thick like an aloe, so it isn't one of those we don't think.
I'm not a gardener so have no idea - my gardening neighbour doesn't recognise it either but said it isn't a weed. We've been waiting for flowers or something - but nothing but leaves!
Hoping someone can help me!
Many thanks!

I wonder if it is related to Fatsia.

Hi Eric,

Thank you but I just looked up Fatsia - I see what you mean but I don't think it is. Although it looks like my leaves are quite big & spread wide like a sycamore or maple leaf does, they're actually several individual thin leaves all forming that shape together. I tried to add another photo but the photo limit is only 2mb - although my other pics posted fine!
