7 new plants I need to ID!

Sun Jul 14, 2013 11:16 am

(Remember, you can click on each photo for an enlargement)
A friend wants to ID the plants growing on the hill in her backyard so she will know which she should eradicate. I was able to tell her what several were but others, I either don't know or am not sure of. I hope you can help with these.

Plant 1:
These look like burrs but the leaves seem too small for burdock.

Plant 2
I've seen this plant with the white flower stalks before. I thought it might be jumpseed (Persicaria virginiana), but the flower stalks don't seem long or narrow enough for that.

Plant 3
I took several pictures of this yellow flower and in each case it is surrounded by that plant that looks like some kind of rue, so I'm "fairly" sure they go together. Notice those long pods in the foreground.

Plant 4
This broad-leaved plant is growing in several places on her hill and I think it's the same thing I have growing on my property. I would really like to know what this one is.

Plant 5
Is this motherwart?

Plant 6
Honeysuckle?

Plant 7
I don't have a better picture of this plant with yellow flowers because I was photographing something else. When looked at the photo I happened to this little plant over in the corner.

2 - maybe Maianthemum
3 - Celandine?
4 - redbud tree, Cercis canadensis
5 - I'd guess Lobelia siphilitica
6 - honeysuckle should have flowers or berries by now?
7 - one of the wild mustard, maybe

Looking at #2 again, are the seed pods little flat heart-shaped things? Don't know what that's called, but I remember it from OH.

I didn't realize that the first photo I uploaded of what I thought might be motherwart wasn't there. Here it is. Plant 5:

#1: definitely burdock, but with small leaves, maybe A. minus? there are several species. upper leaves during flowering aren't usually big, anyway...

#4: agree with redbud seedlings.

edit: oh, and yes on motherwort (note spelling) that's it. fun little tidbit from wikipedia (via oxford english dictionary): "A word with the suffix -wort is often very old. The Old English word was wyrt, from German origins that connect it to root. It was often used in the names of herbs and plants that had medicinal uses, the first part of the word denoting the complaint against which it might be specially efficacious.'
...not that your mother is a complaint that needs medicining  ...pretty sure motherwort is/was used medicinally for childbirth and many other things. heart stuff too, hence the specific name 'cardiaca'

Thanks, purple and potatoes. I know it's mother"wort" not "wart" but the more I concentrate on not misspelling it, the more likely it is that I will.

I'm still wondering about Plant 6. If it's not honeysuckle, what could it be? The leaves are too big for black locust. My honeysuckle has already lost its blooms and I don't know if hers ever had any.

I looked up redbud and it seems like a desirable tree but growing here in so much shade, I doubt it will ever bloom. I've seen full grown trees but I didn't realize they grew wild like this.

Below is another close up of Plant 2. I can't see much detail, unfortunately, and she lives almost a hour from me. I really thought it looked like some kind of Persicaria, maybe virginiana, but the flower stalk seems broader. Purple is right that the flowers look more like Maianthemum, but the rest of the plant looks different to me. I really don't think it's Capsella. The leaves are quite large.

Purple (are we close enough now that I may call you Purple), Chelidonium majus grows here and it looks just like what she has!!! Yeah! But, I have a question. These leaves look very much like rue and columbine but none are in the same family.....I guess I only had a statement, not a question.

Redbud tree seedlings are fairly common when there's a tree nearby. If those sprouts are in a wrong spot, you might be able to move them. I've been trying to get one from my Mom's house but they are hard to dig up around other tree roots. Haven't succeeded in keeping one alive yet but try occasionally when we find one since they can't stay where they sprout.

#2 is cute but after seeing your new pic, don't think it's something I've seen before.

Yeah redbud seedlings are basically a weed in my yard, they pop up all over. You can transplant them if you get them young, before they have rooted down to forever.

I agree with redbud too. Very distinctive oversized heart shaped leaves.

They are nitrogen fixers and are excellent nurse trees for trees and deeper rooted shrubs in the same way clover is good for grass. It makes sense that they grow all ver because their pea/bean-heaped flowers are lowed by bean-like pods and I'm pretty sure birds and animals eat them.

I was wondering where you are this days... and there you are... make photo of new crazy plants hehe...

PLANT 3 = Chelidonium majus
Plant 6 = can be Simphoricarpus albus...

...I am afraid that for others I need check in my herbarium... I have some of them there...
...If no one will have solution I would find the name...

EDIT

PLANT1 = Arctium pubens
PLANT2 = Circaea lutetiana
PLANT6 is similar to Leonurus but leaves not match so can be... or maybe not...
...other solution is some variety of Mentha arvensis...
