Weed, grass, or plant?

Does anyone recognize this plant at all? It appeared in my garden this spring and I don't recall planting it. It is large to be a weed, but it has a shallow root system making me think it is a weed. I've waited to see if any flowers appear, but I think this is the most mature it is going to get. If I don't get any responses to the contrary, it is getting pulled as a weed in the next few days.

I'd say some type of Aster or Goldenrod.
