Please help us identify this addition to our garden.

Hello all,

We walked to the end of our garden today and saw a new blossom - it hasn't been present the last five years.

We live in the south east of England and our garden backs onto a railway line. We would be very grateful for any help identifying this.

Are you telling us the bottom two pictures are the same plant as the top two?


I don't know what it is, but it is lovely. What a nice "weed" to pop up. Does it have any fragrance? Is the place it showed up in sun or shade?

Mock orange - Philadelphus spp. I'm surprised you didn't mention the fragrance, which is tremendous.

thank you both so much. We are very relieved that it is a 'nice' plant - our garden is a bit overrun, but this is at the end of the garden so blocks the railway line and has a nice, large area to live in. It seems to be doing very well just left to itself, it is big, so it gets sun for most of the day. The smell is really amazing, sorry we didn't mention it, we are new to this gardening thing!

(and yes, it was part of the same plant, we broke off a bit and photographed it inside, then I went out and photographed the whole bush)
