Nuisance plant in NE Ohio

I first noticed this stuff about 5-6 years ago. It started taking over the ditch in the front yard along the road.
Didn't think much of it then, as it actually seemed beneficial. It chokes out all the other taller weeds and remains low growing and dense. I think it only gets about 10-12"tall.
But then, last year when I put in a new flower garden about 20' from the ditch, I noticed this stuff coming up in the raised bed. That is also when I noticed it was actually invading my yard as well.
The grass in that area is very thick and healthy and has no problems with any other weeds (other than a few dandelions of course). So I was surprised to find this throughout it as well. That is when I discovered that whatever this plant is, it seems to spread underground. The 'roots' all seem to connect together about a foot or so underground. Kind of like the bamboo I battled out back, for a couple years, just on a smaller scale.
So I need to identify what it is before I can come up with a game plan for dealing with it.

Thanks for trying.
I checked it out, though, and that isn't what I have.
It does seem to behave similarly though. Though the advice of using a brush killer to be rid of it won't work.
I've already tried it.
Round-Up, and Brush-Be-Gone don't even phase this stuff.

Hi Tay...re useing weedkillers on these sort of plants.
Their root systems are broken into nodule sections like underground bamboo.
With these thin and tough leaved plants it helps to squash and damage them first just prior to application.
Secondly...if they have a root system similar to couch and bindweed, you have to be prepared to give two to three applications.
Always add a good dose of soap to the mix..this helps the soluion to stick.
On the first spray the plant dies down to the first root nodule....this triggers the next two to break...the result is the weed grows twice as thickly.
So these have to be killed off. etc.
It's slow but in time.......
