First one is nandina, considered a weed in some states, birds drop the seeds all over the second one is probably a CA plant. I wouldn't eat nandina berries but birds do.

Hey GardenGnome. Ken here in the Chicago area.
Nice country you live in. I lived in the San Rafael area for 19 years.
Your second plant is Daphne odora. According to the Sunset Western
Garden Book, all of its parts, especially the fruits, are poisonous if ingested.
Your Nandina domestica (heavenly bamboo) is not poisonous. I hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi Ken - I looked at the second picture and immediately thought Daphne. But then I looked up some pictures of Daphnes and all of the pictures I found showed flower clusters, no single flowers as in GG's pix. Are there single flowered Daphnes? thanks rbg

I was more worried about the bamboo.
My sons likes picking them and crushing them.
Kids put there hands in there mouths a lot just wanted to check.
I feel abit better that it isn't toxic.

It is nice here a lot of trees, rivers and lakes.
We get alittle of all types of weather.
Even mid west mile wide tornadoes. O.o
The bamboo doesn't move much in my yard.
We have a tree/weed that grows super fast and can get up to 39 feet.
I think someone said its called a chinese angel tree idk.

the nandina/ heavenly bamboo is not actually a bamboo and does not spread nearly as aggressively as bamboo.

Hey RBG. Ken here again. I checked in the Sunset Western Garden Book and
every species of Daphne says clusters. If it isn’t Daphne then I stand corrected.
Thanx.
