Too soon for me to tell.

Could be but more likely a weed seed. Normally seeds take 3-4 weeks except maybe radish, but especially a perennial.

I don't think its even possible for weeds to pop up there, this is red sand (brought from inland desert, where nothing lives) mixed with peat moss

You'd be surprised where weeds can pop up. Weed seeds stay viable in desert sand for decades waiting for the right conditions. I buy supposedly sterilized potting soil and always get some weeds from it.
I was also not leaning towards thinking those are your strawberries, though it will be a lot easier to tell once they get their true leaves.

Nope, not.
After the first seed leaves, strawberry leaves are three part, like this:

always always? I just wonder since I've grown a number of composite-leaved plants from seed and many start with many fewer sections on the first couple non-seed leaves, then look more like the standard shapes as later leaves come.
and aside from the three-toe thing, that seedling's generally strawberry-like...
but if it stays with single simple leaves for more than a couple leaves, id' say no, too.

Desert plants have seeds that can survive for many years in dry soil just waiting for the next good rainy spell so desert soils can contain an amazing number of viable seeds. The first seedlings look like Jimson Weed which thrives in desert areas. I don't know what the last seedling is but it isn't a strawberry.

That one doesnt look like it was grown from seed though, I doubt that a plant from seed can get two hgue leaves that fast starting from a very tiny plant

These alpine strawberries were grown from seed, they look quite similar to mine

^^^ah-ha! that's what I was saying, I just hadn't seen strawberries from seed. no, you're right, that picture was of an established plant re-sprouting in the spring. looks hopeful for you having more strawberries. like I was saying, looks like the alpines aren't getting compound leaves until the third leaf or so.

I wonder how long will it take them to produce runners, do you think they'll produce runners before June? I need them before that.
