What is this?

I was out in my garden pulling weeds and I pulled this 'nut' out of the ground. I thought it was strange to see it cracked open and growing. Does anyone know what it is? I live in NY in zone 5. Thanks!

It sort of looks like a Hickory nut. Squirrels adore them & bury quite a few in the Fall. Many are forgotten & then sprout.
