Girlfriend has a potted plant she's curious about

Can anyone I.D. this bad boy for me please?

Did she obtain this plant on purpose or did it just show up?

to start with it looks like probably some kind of tree seedling. Is the stem kind of woody and tough?

The only thing she put in that pot was a seed pod she found. She said it does look like a tree and is kind of sturdy for something its size. Could it be euonymous or fraxinus? I'm totally at a loss.

Not euonymus which is vining or very shrubby. I'm not really thinking ash tree either, but not so sure of that, and I don't have a better suggestion.
